Deggendorf provides a variety of charming activities; the golf course at the highest elevation in southern Bavaria, hiking and walking trails, bike trails, horseback riding, tennis, downhill skiing as well as cross country skiing. Leisure seekers can enjoy Deggendorf to the fullest. The city is not only known for its scenic beauty: Deggendorf with its well-known and impressive monuments and numerous sights also offers a diverse culture that will surprise the visitor. And if you are willing to sample the Bavarian hospitality and the traditional kitchen, your stay in the lovable Danube city will create the perfect choice.

From the center of the city a good hiker can reach the peak of the Breitenauer Riegel (altitude 800 meters) in three hours. Munich's international airport, Franz Joseph Strauß, is within an hour's reach and the residents of Munich itself cannot even match this speed. Regensburg, Passau, the Czech Republic - Deggendorf's central location in East Bavaria is indisputable. No wonder that life is pulsating in this charming university town, and that hospitality and social life go as a matter of course.

The extraordinary location of Deggendorf has given the city its second name: "The Gateway to the Bavarian Forest." The wooded mountains form the backdrop of the city square with its broad market streets, and the old city hall with its magnificent Gothic tower. According to the cartographers the latitude of 305 meters above sea level applies to the houses and medieval structures in the center of the city. On top of the Breitenauer Riegel, they measured 1114 meters above sea level. What other city can attest to such discrepancies in altitude? Deggendorf is the key to one of the most beautiful landscapes in central Europe: the Bavarian Forest. Hiking, bicycling, down-hill skiing and cross-country skiing: everything is within reach. Sports, recreational facilities, and nature allow for a convivial atmosphere.

Deggendorf presents itself as an economic center in southeast Bavaria. The city provides a location for companies that have established contact to the international world of business. High-tech, made in Deggendorf, is a trademark, not a slogan. The domestic port provides a free trade zone for the city. It is next to Duisburg the only one in the federal territory. In 1994, the city gained a technical university whose positive impact will make itself felt in years to come in many areas. And tour boats that cruise on the Danube can dock at the new cruise ship dock.

`Culture times four` -- that’s what they call it in Deggendorf. The city museum and the craft museum offer an informative cross-section and lively expedition through the regional history with an original "Biedermeier" pharmacy. The "Kapuzinerstadl", church of a former cloister, offers international art displays, and provides a micro-theater and a concert hall. The library is a splendid example of modern architecture and is counted among the best in the Free State of Bavaria.
